Which Foods Do Not Need A Nutrition Label?

This post will outline the various food packages that do not require nutrition label. As per nutrition labelling regulations, there are foods that should have mandatory labelling and those that should be labelled voluntarily. Most food packages require to be labelled to inform of the contents and portions used in preparation; however, the inclusion of labels for some foods is not a must unless it is voluntary.

Among the foods that do not need a label are:

  • Raw foods including vegetables, fruits, etc. For most of these raw foods, there are already determined values as to the types of nutrients and calories contained in them.
  • Foods that contain limited amounts of nutrients i.e., coffee, tea, spices etc.
  • Foods that are ready for consumption that are prepared on-site-i.e., these foods may have labels when not prepared on-site. A similar food may require a label if not prepared on-site and not need a label when prepared on-site. For example, pre-packaged cake may contain nutritional values when prepared in a remote site but it may not require a label if prepared on- site.

Most foods are mandated to contain a nutrition label although not all food packages need a label, including raw foods, those made on-site and those with little amounts of nutrients.
