Are Nutrition Labels Accurate?

Are nutrition labels accurate? We are aware that nutrition labels aid consumers to make informed choices about a food. They allow you to know how much nutrients are in a food package. However, are they accurate?

Well, most labels are accurate as they inform about content of elements. Usually, the methods employed in determining the nutritional values are thoroughly assessed to ensure precision. Nevertheless, there can be slight variations on the labels due to varying methods of analysis employed by the different manufacturers.

For example, the quantities of certain preservatives i.e. flavours may not be included, yet they can lead to slight variations in the quantities on calories especially if they contain some sugars. Also, while health and nutrition claims may indicate health and nutritional benefits, the clarity as to how much of a nutrient has been reduced or added to exact those benefits, may not be clearly defined.

Hence, it is advisable not to limit the purchase of a product based solely on a nutritional or health claim or an added nutrient. For example, just because a food package may have a claim that a nutrient that should be consumed in moderation is in reduced amounts i.e. low sodium does not necessarily imply that other nutrients that should be consumed moderately are also reduced. It could beĀ  high in nutrients such as sugars or fatsĀ  that you require to consume moderately.

All in all, even with those variations especially in quantities, the inaccuracy is rarely significantly different, and thus nutrition labels are quite accurate.
