Complications During Pregnancy

In this post, we will list the common complications during pregnancy including:

Gestational Diabetes: Causal factors are associated with hormonal changes experienced during pregnancy that lead to insulin resistance.

Pre-eclampsia: It is hypertension that occurs during pregnancy. Its causal factors are not precisely known. Speculations link the complication to problems with the placenta.

Haemorrhage –This may occur and lead to abortions. Its causes

Ectopic Pregnancy: Implantation normally occurs within the uterus; however when an ectopic pregnancy occurs, the fertilized egg embeds outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube.

Miscarriage: A variety of factors such as maternal health complications, genetic abnormalities, hormonal problems etc can increase the risk of miscarriage.

Foetal Growth Restriction:The foetus does not develop properly mainly as a result of maternal health concerns or complications with the placenta.

Preterm Labour: Cause: This is when delivery takes place before and is mainly caused by certain maternal health issues including infections, multiple pregnancies, or certain maternal health issues.

Placenta Previa: This occurs when the placenta partly or completely covers the cervix.

It is recommendable for you to seek ante-natal care to allow for the early detection of these complications. This reduces your risk of poor pregnancy outcomes and allows for the timely management of complications. Other complications including gestational diabetes and preeclampsia are more common among older pregnancies –more than 35 years old making it more necessary to seek ANC services in such cases.
