Factors To Consider When Buying Different Foods

There are various factors you should consider when making purchases of the various foods. The priority should be for you to select foods with optimal nutritive value and flavour. This post will offer some guidance on how to make proper food selections that are not only cost-effective but nutritious too.

When buying fruits and vegetables, select those that have no damage or bruises as damaged ones harbour micro-organisms such as bacteria that cause further deterioration. The damaged ones are also less nutritious. Select only those that are fresh. The fruits should provide a sweet scent when ripe and should be colourful. Coloured vegetables and fruits tend to contain phytochemicals which offer nutritional benefits. Fresh vegetables and fruits can be identified from their bright colours and firm textures. Those with spots, discolouration or wrinkles, are usually of a lower quality.

When buying roots and tubers, choose those that do not contain soil. They should be firm and compact bulky. They should not contain sprouts , spots or damages and moulds. Choose the dry onesĀ  with smooth skin and fresh.

Meat should also be fresh. Any odours and off-flavours indicate that the meat is spoilt. If it is slimy, it also indicates spoilage and that it should be discarded. It should be firm and red in colour. The darkening or a change in colour indicates spoilage.

When purchasing starchy vegetables: Should be fresh andĀ  select those that have a uniform colour and no damage or bruises or spots and moulds as they may signify decay. They should be firm and not soggy as this may indicate spoilage.

When selecting foods, choose fresh ones without odours or damages.
