Recently, there are increasingly numerous issues in maternal and child health. In specifity, there are rising concerns around the few health care facilities, poor quality of care , inadequate health equipment and few medical personnel especially in underdeveloped countries. An increased risk of infections within hospital settings also poses another challenge to the utilization of MCH services. Most concerning are the many maternal mortality cases resulting from complications during pregnancy, some of which can be managed or prevented. The decrease of public-funded facilities which are replaced by those privately-owned, further hinders the accessibility to MCH services.
Common maternal issues linked to an increased risk of mortality include: haemorrage, sepsis, hypertension, preterm delivery, and unsafe abortions. Other maternal concerns include preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, infections, still births , and miscarriages. Child health issues include: neurological disorders , skin conditions, allergies, eye problems , gastrointestinal complications, pneumonia,
Therefore, it is important for a mother and child to seek MCH services to reduce probable complications and incidences of morbidity and mortality. The issues addressed are commonly identified among women and children and can usually be prevented or managed when proper treatment is sought for early. For example, a woman who attends preconceptional visits can receive advice on proper nutrition prior to pregnancy, have any nutrient deficiencies addressed and recognize whether their weight is appropriate. Besides , any conditions that can interfere with the pregnancy can be identified and managed effectively. For example, a woman with hypertension or gestational diabetes can be advised on how to manage these conditions to reduce risk of complications. Through regular medical reviews, children can grow appropriately, and reduce the risk of stunting cases, appetite concerns can be identified and nutrient deficiencies treated before they become severe. In addition, any health issues including neurological disorders ,allergies etc can be identified and managed. As a result, the maternal and child health issues mentioned earlier are unlikely to occur.
To address maternal and child health issues:
Informing women on the importance of MCH is imperative for them to recognize the benefits they can receive.
There should be better access to health care facilities either by increasing their number or placing them near community centres.
By increasing insurance coverage , most women with financial constraints can access MCH services.
