A food system entails the composite value-enhancing activities included from food cultivation to food consumption. These food system activities are integral to the development of key socio-cultural outcomes involving food security, nutrition and health,food nutrition. In some cases, waste managemnt (comes after consumtion) is included as part of the food system components.


Any type of activity involved from farming to when the food is consumed are part of the components of a food system. .This also includes all the elements involved e.g. the personnel who handle the food through the various stages, farm inputs, infrastructural facilities, procedures , organizations etc. The inter-relatedness of the food system components ensures that any change in one component of the food system affects another component in that food system.

Sustainable food systems are vital in reshaping the productivity , resilience , inclusivity of marginalized groups to ensure the delivery of helathy and nutritionally-adequate foods to each one. A food system capable of achieving food and nutrition security should consider the fiscal, environmental and social aspects to generate systemic constarints to a sustainable food ecosystem.

                                    Components Of A Food System


Production-This stage involves planting of crops .It is depedent on the available natural resources, is labour-intensive and requires agricultural equipment .The seeds are planted and provided with the necessary conditions to grow.

Processing-Raw products are transformed into consumables through processes such as heating, canning, freezing etc.


Packaging-Food products are contained in packages for easy distribution and storage, and to also appeal to customers.


Marketing-The food products are advertised to potential customers.


Distribution-The food is transported from industries to storage facilities , local markets, hotels etc.


Consumption-The selected foods are prepared and then consumed.


Waste management-It involves utilizing discarded food in cnstructive ways to minimize food losses and wsate through the food chain.


Food system components involve the various stages a food undergoes before it can be consumed including production, processing, marketing, packaging, distribution,consumption and waste management.
