When we were discussing the importance of pre-conception care, we recognized its significant impact in shaping pregnancy outcomes as well as the long-term welfare of a mother and that of her child. The foetus is ensured an environment that facilitates its proper development with minimal probabilities of deficiencies that can predispose it to birth defects and other complications.

Advisably, both the man and woman intending to have a baby should prioritize their nutrition, lifestyle habits and fitness at least 6 months prior to conception to maximize sperm quality and successfully prepare the woman for pre-conception. Good nutrition should focus on;

Pre-pregnancy weight- In actuality, there is great correlation between pre-pregnancy weight and a baby’s birth rate. With either a low or high BMI before pregnancy, there is an increased risk of poor pregnancy outcomes.For instance, an over-weight woman may be at higher risk of complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, prolonged labour and her baby may be at higher risk of becoming over-weight. Alternatively, a woman with low BMI may be at increased risk of having a premature birth and having a low-birth weight infant.  Contraceptive use-Certain contraceptives can alter one’s fertility once discontinued. This has to be addressed by the medical practitioner. Also, other contraceptives can impede the absorption and utilization of certain nutrients predisposing one to nutrient deficiencies.

Eating disorders and treatment-The early diagnosis of eating disorders is important in the prevention of negative effects on the intended baby.By prioritizing good nutrition, it is easier to manage eating disorders. 

Recent pregnancies-Without birth spacing, maternal stores can be depleted thus guidance can be offered through pre-conception visits as to whether to proceed with wanting a pregnancy or to delay for a while until maternal stores are restored.
